The modern game has produced a generation of players who break records almost every season. This collection follows eleven of them, from the two giants who dominated the 2010s, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, to Neymar and Harry Kane, and the new wave led by Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Jr., Rodri, Ousmane Dembélé and the teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal.
Their numbers are astonishing. Messi scored 91 goals in a single calendar year, Ronaldo has scored 140 Champions League goals and won five Ballon d'Or awards, Haaland reached 100 Premier League goals in 111 games, and Kane became the first Englishman to score 500 professional goals. Neymar's €222 million move to PSG remains a world transfer record, and Mbappé scored a hat-trick in the 2022 World Cup final.
Many of them had to overcome early doubts. Messi needed treatment for a growth condition, Kane was released by Arsenal's academy for being "chubby", Rodri was let go as a youth player for being too small, and Vinícius Jr. had to answer crushing criticism before becoming FIFA's best player. Lamine Yamal did his school homework during Euro 2024, which Spain won a day after his birthday.
Off the pitch they are just as interesting: Rodri lived in university dorms and drove a second-hand Opel Corsa, Mbappé donated his entire 2018 World Cup earnings to charity, and Haaland used the Champions League anthem as his alarm clock. Choose a player below to read fifteen facts.
